Jeff Michalski for School Board

Jeff Michalski for Orange County Board of Education

Press Release
Thursday, February 21, 2008

Jeff Michalski has announced he will run for the Orange County School Board. The Michalskis, who live at 6414 Beaver Valley Drive in Efland, have made northern Orange County home for nearly ten years. Jeff and wife Maria are the proud parents of two young children: a son who is a first grader at Hillsborough Elementary and a daughter who this fall, hopes to begin her kindergarten year at Hillsborough Elementary.

Jeff states that he is running for Orange County Board of Education because he “is committed to providing the best possible education and choices for the children and parents of Orange County”.

Jeff, known as Coach Ski or Deputy Ski, has devoted the majority of his adult life to teaching, coaching, and guiding young people to exceed the expectations of others and strive for excellence in every aspect of their young lives.
  • Behavior Specialist and Exceptional Children’s Teacher (Durham)
  • Football and Softball Coach (Durham)
  • Strength and Conditioning Coach (Cedar Ridge High)
  • Original School Resource Officer (Cedar Ridge High and Partnership Academy)
  • Drugs Alcohol Resistance Education (DARE) Instructor (Grady Brown Elementary)
  • Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) Instructor (A.L. Stanback Middle School)
Currently, Jeff works as a Resource Developer recruiting, training, licensing, and supervising therapeutic foster parents. Jeff works for the same agency for which he and his wife Maria were therapeutic foster parents for nearly five years.

Jeff is very involved in the community:

  • Hillsborough Elementary volunteer
  • Coaches two youth soccer teams
  • Teaches catechism (youth religious education) in his church

Jeff's goals for Orange County Schools include:

  • Choice in Public Education
  • Involving the community in support of our schools
  • Closing the achievement gap by improving ALL Orange County schools
  • Providing focus and support to our schools not currently meeting AYP standards
  • Empowering students to become life long learners

I'm afraid of a significant backlash to candidates that support HES. There are many families that have been sold the theory that HES is a school for elitists, and that we only wanted to prevent our children from going to school with CES children. Public sentiment may not be on our side because of the slash and burn tactics of the anti-HES faction. Liz has been blasting us as frills school, and unfortunately people are listing to her. Dennis did the same, but he lost all credibility due to his arrest of embezzlement. Debbie has tried her best to link us to being racists. I'm not sure why Debbie would go to such a tactic unless she has a personal axe to grind (rumor is that her child was DENIED admission to HES). If this is true, it's time for Debbie to take a class on forgive and forget.

We need to educate the voters of Orange County about the truth of this Board. The Board wants to spend money frivously that bring no benefit to our children. The current Board has abused its power to implement effective change. Worst, the Board has told countless lies about us to their constituents about our "true" motives. We need to educate the voters that the ex-leader of the board, who four current members followed blindly, has been arrested for embezzlement. This is not personal, this is just establishing the truth.

I'm very disappointed in Debbie if the reason why she has shown so much anger and hatred towards HES was because her child was denied admission from HES. You would expect something more from a person with Debbie's intelligence.

Can anyone verify if Debbie's child was denied admission to HES?

Yes...Debbie told me herself that she applied and was denied admission.

I don't think she is angry or bitter because her child was denied admission into HES. Her personality is basically that of an arrogant know-it-all person who can flash her Pharm D in front of all the ignorant "HES elitists".

This is unbelievable. I cannot believe that Debbie would hold a grudge towards HES because her child was denied admission to HES.

Is this a good example for the children in HES?

I would like to encourage us all to stop working against the board and start working for the elections. We don't know what will happen in the next few months regarding the re-admissions into HES, but I have every reason to believe that we all will get back in. Let's use our energies toward the campaigns of these prospective BOE candidates.

I wish I had your optimism about all getting back in. I think we need to keep pressure on the board so they will ammend the kicking out of current students & not removing $300,000 from Central & Efland to build a free daycare. Every property tax payer should be outraged since their taxes will go up because of this policy. Orange Co. already has the 3rd highest tax rate in the state.

Let's stick to the facts and stop making personal jabs at the board members. You know when you are out of line and speaking out of anger. We represent something greater than ourselves. Our behavior leads to the community's perception of HES.
We need to follow the Dolphin Beliefs and especially need to treat others as you want to be treated.

I agree with anonymous February 26, 2008 2:48 PM. We need to take the high road and look past attacking the individual board members. Instead, let's look at the Board as a whole. I'm sure two of the current members (Liz, Debbie) and one former member that has been arrested for embezzlement (Dennis) wish they could change their actions in the past. Unfortunately, they cannot. I don't think Liz will run again, so let's not worry too much about her. I think Debbie probably realized, even if she can't admit to it, made some serious gaffes by stereotyping HES parents as elitist snobs. We have to work with her for 2 more years, so let's not beat her down too much more. Her reputation within the community has taken a serious beating, and I don't want anyone to beat up on her anymore. Dennis, on the other hand, is history. He made a choice to leave the board, and that is a good thing.

"We don't know what will happen in the next few months regarding the re-admissions into HES, but I have every reason to believe that we all will get back in."

You don't have any idea how true this statement is. Save HES has done a wonderful job of keeping the Board members accountable for their actions. Before Save HES, there was not an effective watchdog for how OCS was operating. Believe me, Central Office is a much better place to work because of you. The Board members have lost their excessive power because they don't have a puppet that they can control anymore. Thank you.

Do not underestimate Liz Brown's blind ego. Do not assume Liz Brown is smart enough to realize what she will be facing should she decide to run for re-election. Filing for re-election doesn't end until 12:00 noon on Friday, February 29th.

If you want to watch a great show, go to downtown Hillsborough on Friday around 12:00 noon to the Board of Elections office to see who all files. Liz and her pals always wait till the last day and the last minute to file.

In 2004, when there were 3 vacant seats and 1 interim seat, Liz Brown filed for the one interim seat, then came back the next day and switched to one of the 3 permanent seats. If history is an indicator, these upcoming days will see a lot of action from Liz Brown.

I am afraid that Liz Brown will have a lot of support in the community based entirely on her opposition to HES. There has been much backlash against HES in the community because of the way things were done in the past; how we have been portrayed in the media; and to be honest the way some of us have behaved in open forums.
Again we need to stick to hard facts when dealing with her and the other board members. Her record does speak for itself, but that depends on what side you are on in the debate.
