SPECIAL MEETING NOTICE
The Orange County Schools Board of Education will be holding a special meeting on Thursday, September 6, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at
Even though this meeting is being held at Central Elementary School, and they appear to be interested in only "concerns and questions from the Central Elementary School community," it is open to everyone.
If you missed the "question and evasion" session at HES this past Tuesday, this would be a great chance to watch Dennis Whitling audition for "Dancing with the Stars" as he works hard to avoid actually answering any questions from the parents he supposedly serves. If you already witnessed Dennis' dancing skills, you can be sure that Ted Triebel will be reading from a new script for this performance.

Anyone who attends the meeting at CES should try to show some class.
Hopefully the board members who attend will "show some class" and answer the parents' questions.
I agree with anonymous poster #1. Let's end the name calling and accusations and keep to the point.
Perhaps Liz will attend! All the HES parents at last weeks meeting should attend to hear what she has to say, since apparently we weren't important enough for her to grace us with her presence.
The lack of discipline the HES parents have shown is shameful. The reason why these people are upset is because Dennis didn't tell them what they want to hear. I agree with the first anonymous that those who attend the meeting should "try to show some class". The Board is trying to empower the disadvantaged families. Show some heart.
That's right. You parents should accept that the Board members were elected because they know better than you do what is best for your kids.
This merger has been nothin but an insult to CES parents. We have to be viewed as dumb and not caring by everyone. I don't want my kids to be around other children who think thay are better than we.
In life there will always be the "have's" and the "have nots". It is how a person looks at their situation and the world around them that determines how they will behave. Yes, there will be a time when someone will look down on another. It is up to you how you teach your child to deal with it.
All the children in Orange County deserve the best education possible. We care deeply for the plight of all children. That being said, it is human nature to take care of their own first. Of course you would put your child's needs above another's. Wouldn't you?
If a group of people are threatening your child's right to attend the best school in the county, wouldn't you fight for them? How classy would you be if the shoe was on the other foot? With the "powers that be" sitting in front of you smirking, making a mockery of the entire situation, how much self constraint would you have? How does it feel to have the power over your own child's education threatened? I'll tell you, this sucks!
This merger has been and still is an insult to all parents, students, and staff of both Central AND Hillsborough Elementary Schools. The Board's lack of respect for the people who elected them and the students they serve, along with their ignorant and racist comments and attitude regarding socio-economic balance and student performance are unforgivable. Perpetuating the myth that minority and/or poor students are dumb, lazy, and incapable of bettering themselves or that white students are rich, privileged, and smart is beyond reproach. I would hope that ANYONE attending the next two meetings would "show some class"- because as hard as it is for some to believe, class has nothing to do with socio-economic status (ever heard of Paris Hilton?). This merger is doomed to fail not because it may not go through, but because the Board has fostered an atmosphere of hostility and ignorance from the beginning. HES did not fire the first shot. But we're all going down in flames together. The only ones I pity are the children of BOTH schools, who are caught in the crossfire.
I think the parents at HES and CES can share ideas and concerns about the merger. It should be the goal of both schools to work together on implementing the restructuring of the schools. Maybe the HES parents can (PTSA?) have a welcoming party for the CES parents. The Board wants the schools to come together and be a team. The schools are a block apart geographically, but light-years away in all other aspects.
I agree that the parents at HES and CES can share ideas and concerns about the merger.
It should be the goal of parents at both schools to work together to prevent this disaster from taking place.
If it is still forced down their throats, maybe the CES parents can (PTSA?) have a welcoming party for the few HES parents to agree to stay.
Why does every discussion presume that HES parents wouldn't welcome CES kids? A large number of new CES families just joined us last week, and they were welcomed by all.
If you want to come to HES, by all means come, but the school board shouldn't destroy what parents like about both schools in an effort to force the two groups together.
If you expand HES, you will have our support. If you divide HES, you will destroy it.
Plain and simple.
Has anybody explored the possibility of turning HES into a charter school? More information here at the NC General Statutes under Part 6A (115C‑238.29).
Jon,
I actually brought that subject up in an earlier posting (http://savehes.blogspot.com/2007/04/food-for-thought.html) but at that time there was hope that common sense would befall the Board and it wouldn't be necessary.
I guess it is obvious that those hopes were not well founded, so it is probably time to more seriously consider the option.
The Board knows they need to help CES (the school). CES (the school) did not make AYP. Unfortunately, the Board should be looking at helping CES (THE CHILDREN). The Board is hiding this problem by circumventing the rules of NCLB, knowing that improvement is measured by the school, not the CHILDREN. THEY ARE NOT ALL HELPING THE CES KIDS BY THIS MERGER. The CES kids do not need to be shamed, humiliated, and ridiculed because the Board has continuously made poor decisions. They need to be given the proper attention they deserve, both at their home and in the classroom.
The Board has pushed this merger down both the CES and HES parent's throats. There has been absolutely no consideration of feelings. Even worse, there has been no consideration of education.
