Convicted!

DOC Offender #: 1095037

Well, after nearly six months of waiting for justice to be done, the Dennis Whitling debacle appears to have finally come to a close.

As of Thursday, August 7, 2008, the former Chairman of the Orange County Board of Education is a convicted felon.

Without so much as a single word in the media (surely to Dennis's delight), the North Carolina Department of Corrections has revealed that Dennis was convicted of Embezzlement in Durham County last Thursday.

He was sentenced to 6-8 months in jail - all of which was suspended - and immediately released back into our community on probation.

Does he have to pay the money back? Did he plead guilty to avoid jail time? Do we know any thing about the conditions of his probation?

What on earth can he do to earn a living as a convicted felon?

How sad for everyone.

Dennis Whitling is a disgrace to Orange County. I'm very ashamed that the School Board refused to even look into possible impropriety performed under his tenure. We all know that the merger plan wasn't about children. What was the merger plan about? Kickbacks? Power?

I am ashamed that the members of the Board of Education didn't even consider to investigate reimbursements, contracts, etc.

As a newly convicted felon, Dennis can enter into career training programs that will assist his career. He will have access to training programs that may identify his skill sets and match them with opportunities. He may have to perform some manual work, he may have opportunities in customer service. Unfortunately, he will no longer be working around money or inventory due to his felony conviction.

He has his freedom, and right now that probably means more to him than it did a year ago. He's losing his house, probably having to sale other belongings, but he is at this point a free man. So what if he'll end up living in a shack or an apartment? Better than a prison cell.

I hope Dennis does the admirable step and apologize to the current school board for his unforgivable actions in his personal life.

Dennis should move out of Orange County so his family won't have to suffer from his embezzlement. Having a father/husband as a convicted thief has to be an embarrassment.

Congratulations go out to Dennis Whitling on his new status. Dennis has now joined the ranks of other corrupt North Carolina politicians.

Dennis now has something in common with Mike Nifong, Jim Black, Paul Miller, Frank Ballance, Meg Scott Phipps, Thomas Wright, and (if Rielle Hunter's income was suplemented by campaign cash) John Edwards.

Maybe Dennis can go work at the Liz Brown farm. This could teach Dennis a new skill set. Of course, there is always a risk that some eggs would "disappear".

Hey Dennis, don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Mr. 1095037--has a pretty good ring to it, doesn't it? I guess Mr. 1095037 has shamed the entire district. Mr. 1095037 enjoyed discrediting anyone who stood in his way of a very self-serving agenda. He has made several of his followers on the board look like complete idiots.

Remember, Mr. Ted Triebel stated "Dennis Whitling is an honest, upright person". Shame on you Ted for being played the fool!

What a great learning tool to explain to our kiddies that crime doesn't pay. Dennis has lost just about everything he had. He's disgraced the community, disgraced his family, and has disgraced himself. Worst of all, he's lost the respect of all citizens within Orange County.

I agree with the other blogger that Ted should be ashamed that he was hoodwinked by Dennis. The same should go to Liz, Debbie, and Susan. Liz's stupidity has been well documented, but we tend to leave Debbie and Susan alone. Debbie behavied in such a disgraceful manner. She believes that the majority of Orange County people are stupid, resulting in failed AYP numbers. She was played the fool over and over again. Then there is Susan, who just batted her eyelashes and said "aw shucks" when asked for her opinion. Instead of doing the right thing, she decided to follow the herd. Leadership requires action, not inaction. Dennis knew the weaknesses of these members, and he capitalized on it.

The names have been changed to protect the guilty. Lessons from the Downfall

Dennis was actually sentenced to no less than 6 months and no more than 8 months in prison. His probation is for 24 months. A pretty light sentence for a convicted felon thief.

What is very interesting is the report that Dennis is to have no contact with Thomas Stevens except as ordered by the court. From what I've observed, bad boy Dennis must have lost his big boy temper with his previous boss.

I don't believe that Ted, Susan, and Debbie were guilty of anything except being a poor judge of character. They were quick to jump in bed with Dennis and Liz. Dennis was the mastermind of this merger. There needs to be a complete investigation about his misconduct and its ramifications with our school system. Concentrate on whether or not Dennis received a kickback during his reign.

We should also not forget Liz and Shirley. Liz may not be an idiot, but she has fooled many. Shirley just had a vendetta against HES, and she tried to eliminate the school via the heavy hand of our convicted felon thief and the unenlightened one.

Can't we take the picture of this ugly crook felon off the blog? It disgusts me that I actually voted for this dirtbag in 2004. He's worthless. I tried to speak to him a few years ago and he pretty much told me that it wasn't his job to answer any questions from his constituents. He's truly an arrogant jerk. A little dose of reality will be good to him.

When I look at what the last several years have shown, I get sick to my stomach. The reason we don't have a yearround middle school are the votes and rhetoric of Dennis, Liz, and their old buddy, supporter, and mentor Libbie Hough. You remember Libbie. She was elected in 2002 and was one of those that hired Shirley Carraway and defended her to the end and beyond. Looks like the plot to destroy HES started long ago and Libbie was there at the start.

Libbie voted to close the yearround program at Stanback and she, along with the others, drove the final nail in the coffin of a yearround middle when Gravely Hill was built and they voted against making one of the three middle schools yearround.

Now we see what arrogant haters they were and what their motivations were. They were hating on the kids then and they still do. Want to know something terfifying? Check this out. She is also the one who promoted Ted, Susan, and Debbie and shut out Tony in 2006. She has been a long-term antagonist of Dr. Halkiotis and the BoCC and railed against him in the paper this year. Any of us who are members of the Chamber should file a complaint to the leadership and withdraw our membership if they refuse to dismiss her. Hate has no place in schools and no place in promoting our community.
