Tonight's meeting

Just to keep everyone informed, the Orange County Board of Education will hold its first meeting since ramming through its revised plan to hide the struggling children of Orange County tonight at 7:00 pm.

This will provide the first opportunity for people to comment on the Board's decision to use an accounting trick to remove Central and Efland-Cheeks Elementary schools from Title 1 School Improvement Status by taking over $300,000 in federal Title 1 funding away from the two schools.

Given that Ted Triebel heavy-handedly crushed any opportunity for community discussion or debate of his new plan at the early-morning meeting he used to propose, discuss and pass this new plan, anyone wishing to have ex post facto input to this plan will need to take advantage of their three minutes of public comment time. It could be fun.

What: Orange County Board of Education Regular Meeting
When: Monday, January 7, 2008 @ 7:00 pm
Where: Orange County Board of Education Meeting Room
200 E. King Street
Hillsborough, NC

For me, today is a day of firsts.

1. This is my first blog post.

2. After seven years with children in Orange County Schools, today I had a new experience. This morning I turned in an application for free or reduced lunch. The process was a simple one: front of one sheet and delivery to school.

Why apply now? ACCORDING TO WHAT THE BOARD APPROVED, OUR ONE FREE OR REDUCED CHILD WILL ASSURE THAT FOUR NON-FREE OR REDUCED LUNCH STUDENTS CAN REMAIN AT HES.

Like our family, I believe there are others who qualify. If your family qualifies for free or reduced lunch, even if your child will remain due to grandfathering, please consider applying. Four other HES families are hoping you will.

DO A DOLPHIN DEED - SIGN UP FOR FREE OR REDUCED LUNCH!

I have sworn off posting, but I must say that your application is so appreciated. I know that it was a difficult decision to apply for free lunch and I just want to give you a heart felt thanks for the families who are hoping to get back in. That was a big step and kind of you.

After reading the brief recap in the Herald Sun today--I am concerned by the application timeline. When will we hear back as to whether or not our children were admitted to HES? Anyone who was there care to address?

FRL (Free & Reduced Lunch) status may not be important to the board. The rules are changing. In 2007 the board set a goal of 28-48% FRL students in each school to balance the schools socioeconomically. At yesterday's board meeting one of the assistant superintendents reported the proposed registration form will not ask for FRL status. They will ask parents to indicate their income "band" and their level of education. They and the school board attorney claim it is legal. This remains to be seen. This article, "Use Income Level, Instead of Race, to Integrate the School" and also the discussion that follows make for some interesting reading -

Even the Wake County School system, the Grand Poobah of socioeconomic engineering, does not ask parents for their income and educational levels.

Regarding free lunch applications (anon. Jan. 9 2:14 p.m): I am more than happy to have my tax dollars go to as many free lunches as possible in the entire region. Our nation spends too much money helping people in other countries. With the price of gas and groceries, I think that FRL should be extended to a family of four who make under 50k instead of the 38k. There is absolutely no shame in applying for and receiving FRL IMO. So I'm with the first two posters and I'd like to know more about why you think it is a joke. For many people, it has become very difficult to make ends meet and it isn't funny at all.

My family doesn't quality for FRL, however, I'm so sick of hearing the board obsess about it, I think everyone should apply to shut them up.

What makes you need to believe they are joking?

The first poster looks to have accepted the rules of the game the board is playing and has taken action based on the statistics the board said they would be following. Seems logical.

The second poster thanked the first poster. Aside from making assumptions about how difficult the decision was, it really didn't sound like it was a difficult decision from what poster 1 wrote, there is no potential joke that I see.

So what are you not saying that you want to say?
